What is Creative Arts Therapy?

Creative Arts Therapy is an evidence-based and experiential psychotherapeutic approach offered by qualified practitioners. Creative Arts Therapy values creative expression and processes as an intrinsic part of human experience and can help us to explore and express what is often difficult to put into words. It is a holistic approach, that values cognitive, emotional, physical, and spiritual wellbeing and offers a space to connect to ourselves and others. Creative Arts Therapy is process-based, meaning the experience itself has the capacity to facilitate change and insights, and offer experiences of regulation, enjoyment and discovery. No matter your skill level, there is no right or wrong way to create here!

What happens in a session?

Sessions involve a combination of talking and art-making, and use a variety of materials such as drawing, painting, sculpture, writing, movement, and working with nature. In a typical session we might start with a spoken or arts-based check-in before moving into creative exploration, this might be something you bring to explore, or I might offer a prompt or activity to respond to. Usually there is time for sharing and reflection at the end of a session, as well as time to look at resources or explore supports. An art therapy session is client-centered and strengths based so often looks different depending on your needs!
